Sue Warburton, founder and leader of Canalside Quilters, tell us about the group's first exhibition.
Hi, I'm Sue Warburton, Founder member and leader of The Canalside Quilters. We've been an established group of quilters now for over 2yrs, have 24 members, and are all passionate about our quilting. We meet every week on Tuesday mornings, 9:30am to12:30pm. We are very proud of our venue, the Saddleworth Museum and Gallery, in Uppermill, nr Oldham. We have a fabulous space in the gallery itself, a creative inducing area to work in, and apt environment to have such a traditional craft as quilting going on.
This year has been particularly exciting for us, as we were offered space in the Gallery to exhibit our quilts! What a focus that gave us all.challenge was on.lets produce some great quilts, and really use our creative talents to show off our work. We decided to have the opening of our exhibition running over the whole weekend and incorporate our annual Christmas Fair. What a thrill we all had hanging our pieces of work, each one of us having the opportunity to hang their favourite piece. What a wonderful weekend we had, inviting family and friends, and the public to come along and see exactly what we get up to on a Tuesday mornings.apart from having tea and biscuits.and putting the world to rights!! We also managed to raise £1200 to give out to our chosen charities. A real success you might say, and a very positive experience for us all, as well as a wonderful showcase to show just how thriving our traditional crafts are.
The exhibition came to an end on the 13th January 2009, we've had many visitors come through the Gallery, including the Chief executive of Oldham, and some lovely comments in our visitors book. As we move into the new year I know we are looking forward to much more happy quilting , lots of cups of tea and biccies, enjoying our passion for quilting together. May I wish you all a very Happy Quilting 2009, and if ever you are in our area, feel free to come and visit us, you'd be very welcome.
