Jill is a reader of Popular Patchwork with a very special mission! She contacted us recently to see if we could help her in her project. Jill has been involved with fundraising for Children's Hospice South West for the past 14 years. She has been part of quilting groups that have made quilts to raffle, and now realises that there are only so many large quilts one person can make, so she has begun a project which she hopes will keep many quilting friends happy, and also bring pleasure to the children. Every child loves a cushion to cuddle!

The Quillows will be made to be given to the children to take home with them after one of their many visits through out their time with Children's Hospice South West.

Jill is now looking for quilters who live in the South West, and in particular near to Little Bridge House, in Barnstaple, North Devon, Charlton Farm, in Wraxall, North Somerset, and eventually for the new hospice, Little Harbour, to be built at Porthpean, St. Austell, Cornwall. I am sure she would be grateful for contributions from elsewhere. It is very important that Jill has some control over what is being made, such as appropriate quillows for children of different age and gender. The Quillows are made for children in four age ranges, from 0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20 years, and can only be accepted after speaking with Jill first to discuss details.

Jill had a Quillow Day on 16th March in St Erth, Nr. Hayle, Cornwall to launch this project, and to give information and further details. The main reason for the day was so that anyone could come along, and register what they wanted to make and how many. "Launch Day" was a great success, the small village hall was packed at times through out the morning and early afternoon. Jill had a wonderful Mobile fabrics and quilting accessories friend come along which helped to set the atmosphere. Over 36 people signed up to take part in the project, and other local quilting groups will be running quillow workshops during the year. Jill says that she is quite amazed by the response, and will now have to have a great deal of patience to wait for the completed quillows to arrive!!!!

Jill says that she sometimes wonders why she started this idea, but the experience of working for these special children is very rewarding. She says "I must say at times I wonder why I started this but when you hear on the grape vine that someone had put in a request for a "Scooby Doo" design, you just cannot wait to get started!!"

The April 2009 issue of Popular Patchwork includes a great quillow pattern by Anja Townrow. This simple project, made in lovely seaside fabrics from Makower's Coast range, might be just the inspiration you need! The next hospice to be built will be in Cornwall, called Little Harbour and lies above a beautiful bay. If you would like to donate a Quillow to CHSW, don't forget to contact Jill before you start, as she is unable to accept Quillows without prior arrangment.
