The Festival of Quilts celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2012, and although the show has gone from strength to strength in that time, the organisers are always seeking ways to improve the show and attract newcomers. So they asked the visitors what they thought, and after many months of research and hard work, a new beginners category for the competition was launched.

My First Quilt is aimed at the newcomer to patchwork and quilting. As the name suggests, this category aims to encourage beginners by asking them to enter their first (or one of their first) attempts at quilt-making.

Together with sponsor sew.co.uk (the new website from Create & Craft TV) Festival of Quilts hope to make patchwork and quilting more accessible.

Patchwork and quilting is an ancient craft that was traditionally used as a means to keep warm, and to use up scraps of old material. What a relevant ethos during these times of austerity! Because of this, combined with a more conscientious attitude to waste and consumerism, we all know that patch-working – like so many crafts – is seeing a revival. We want those taking it up to be recognised and we hope My First Quilt will do just that.

The first prize for the My First Quilt category is £1000 so it’s a great incentive to enter. Entry forms can be downloaded from www.twistedthread.com or here or can be completed online on the new website www.thefestivalofquilts.co.uk

The deadline is the 31st May and all quilts entered will be displayed at the Festival of Quilts from 8th to 11th August at the NEC, Birmingham!

So please complete at entry form and enter today!
