Jan won a copy of The Big Book of Patchwork by Judy Hopkins
Jan says, "What a lovely surprise – I shall look forward to receiving the book. I was delighted to find the online site. I have been a subscriber to the magazine in the past and was looking to take out a subscription as a birthday present for a friend this week when I realised you had an online site and I know I shall visit it often. It is amazing to see the lovely work other quilters have done, very inspirational."
"I took up patchwork and quilting 8 years ago when my daughter asked me to make a quilt for my new granddaughter. Although I had always been into sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc I had never attempted patchwork. I had sometime earlier been to an embroidery workshop where the tutor was also the owner of a patchwork business so I called in, only to find the business was closing, however they told me that making a 9 square patch would be the easiest and explained what to do. Well the top was made in a weekend and I was very pleased with myself, however, I didn’t know a thing about making it into a quilt. What did they mean by batting, sashing and so forth? So the top languished until by marvellous co-incidence a person from the next village to where I was living at the time decided to run a fortnightly workshop called “A, B, C of Quilting” and this opened the door to the wonderful world of patchwork and quilting. By this time a second grandchild was on the way and so I made two lap quilts, one for each of them and I was hooked. I then finished my original effort, which I have kept. Since then I have made numerous quilts, cushions, etc and all thanks to that original teacher, Sandra Morgan, who is a wonderful teacher and who designs some fabulous items, some of which I have made and you can see on my “Friends” album on the website. I make for my own pleasure and give away most the outcomes as gifts to friends and charities such as Quilts for Valour (second photo - Countryside Quilt (Sandra’s design) worked in red, white and blue, although there a few things I cannot bear to part with. Once again thank you for my gift."
