We've had quite a lot of winners recently, come and meet some of them!
Harriet's Cretan Olive Groves
May Join Prize was won by Harriet of Cambridgeshire. Harriet is an extremely talented
Popular Patchwork reader, and won a copy of "Quilts from the Heart II"
by Karin Renaud. Harriet said, "Wow! I'm amazed and delighted to win this draw. Thank you very much. I have
just googled the book and it looks great and will challenge me to do
something quite different from my normal sewing"
Harriet continues, "Not surprisingly for a reader of Popular Patchwork, I am passionate about
textiles, particularly appliqué, quilting and embroidery. Although I have a
large stash of fabric falling out of drawers, I much prefer dyeing my own
fabric. I tend to work on small pieces and wall-hangings as I find
hand-sewing very relaxing, even though it takes a long time (weeks to
months) to finish a piece. I design my own work inspired by nature,
especially landscapes and flowers, and usually nothing is finished until it
has been densely textured with simple embroidery and/or beads. My ambitions
are to learn to love my sewing machine more, so as to become more
productive and use new techniques, for which Popular Patchwork's website
provides good guidance in the Techniques section. I also use the Events
listing to find out what's on either near to home or further afield if I am
going away for the weekend."
Harriet's May Garden
Harriet sent us some wonderful photos of her work, I love these beautiful wall hangings. The first is "Cretan Olive Groves" (50 x 38 cm), which won third place in the Festival of Quilts Pictorial category in 2007, and the other two come from a challenge Harriet set herself to produce a monthly representation of the colours in her garden. Here we can see May (A window into the garden with alliums and potato vine), and June (A dragonfly's view of the pond). Harriet says "Each is 24 x 19 cm and I
turned all twelve into a concertina book. I have to admit that in the end
it did take more than twelve months to complete!" I hope we see more of Harriets work soon, I'm really very impressed with these pieces.
