The mysteries and mystique of Japanese and Chinese arts and crafts traditions are being uncovered at West Dean this summer, with nine courses running between April and October, exploring East Asian techniques in painting, woodcarving, textiles and ceramics.
West Dean College near Chichester in West Sussex programmes over 700 short courses a year, primarily in arts and crafts. Ranging from one-day to week-long Summer Schools, West Dean offers a creative and supportive environment for people of all levels to study new techniques.
Arashi shibori – pleating and dye techniques on silk (April 16–19) £316 Suitable for all
Learn how to create seductive pleated silk accessories using the Japanese techniques of Arashi Shibori. Using acid dyes, you master the art of wrapping silk to create the pleats and then introduce contrasting colours on the peaks of the pleats. Different methods of folding the silk to achieve different effects and patterns are covered. With ANNE SELBY
Kumihimo braids and beads (April 23–27) £363 Suitable for all
Develop skills in Japanese Kumihimo braiding and learn techniques for combining it with beads to create original work. This course covers the basics of equipment, warp threads, braiding sequences and pattern design, then moves on to consider bead types, design ideas and finishing. Dyeing to unwrap – Shibori and resist-dyed felt fabric (April 29–May 2) £281 Suitable for all
Create unique hand-felted cloth suitable for garments, accessories or interior pieces. You build up a range of resist-dyed samples on fabric and hand-felted cloth as you explore the potential of colour, pattern, mark making, texture and surface qualities in nuno felt. With LIZ CLAY
Japanese-style batik (October 5–7) £209 Intermediate/Advanced
This course offers a unique opportunity to explore Japanese batik and learn techniques including brushed colour, shading and stencil waxing. You work on a Japanese theme with a well-travelled tutor with technical expertise and a deep understanding of this art form from first-hand experience. With NOEL DYRENFORTH
Course fees are non-residential. Accommodation (including dinner and breakfast) is available from £91 for a weekend (Fri eve to Sun pm) or two day course, from £244 for a 5-day course and from £240 for a 6 day summer school. Partners who are not attending courses are welcome to stay at the College, sharing your room on a resident only basis, priced at £70 per night full board.
