The show has become the largest celebration of patchwork and quilting in Europe, with over 300 companies exhibiting, more than 30 galleries showcasing the work of professional artists, 1000 plus quilts entered into competition plus hundreds of workshops, masterclasses and lectures.
This year’s gallery artists include Ann Johnston with Quilts of the Sierra Nevada; Susan Shie who celebrates This American Life and Alicia Merrett with Mapping the Imagination. Group displays include Art Textiles and France Patchwork in addition to the EQA, European Art Quilt VIII and The Modern Quilt Group.
New this year, the Festival Theatre will host the Awards Ceremony and the Fashion Show, but also a whole timetable of lectures from leading names in the quilt world. The Quick & Easy workshops offer taster sessions in a choice of over 160 classes and for those who want more intensive learning, the Quilt Academy offers a series of half day workshops and masterclasses (from one day to three) . Subjects range from digital imaging to sashiko, collagraphy to silk paper making plus new for 2014, visitors can learn to use a long-arm quilting machine.
Many choose to stay overnight to get the most from the show and special rates have been organised with the nearby 4 star Hilton Birmingham Metropole. There’s a host of evening events to keep visitors entertained; on Thursday the Awards ceremony honours the winners of the competitions, who are celebrated again that evening at The Festival Dinner. There is a Fashion show on Friday plus the Designer Supper featuring Nel Whatmore and on Saturday, the Barge Dinner and a trip to Shakespeare are both on offer.
