Figure 1: Christmas Wreath Block
Figure 1: Christmas Wreath Block

This simple block is made from half and quarter square triangles. A half square triangle is a square divided along one diagonal into two triangles, whilst a quarter square triangle is a square dividied along both diagonals. The basic block is based on a four patch grid, see Figure 1.

Figure 2: Cutting Diagram

To draft the block, divide your required size block into sixteen squares. For a 6in block, you need the following
  • Four 2in squares of cream
  • Two 2 3/4in squares of cream cut into four quarter square triangles each, for a total of eight triangles
  • Three 2 3/4in squares of light green cut into four quarter square triangles each, for a total of eleven triangles (Discard one)
  • Three 2 3/4in squares of mid green cut into four quarter square triangles each, for a total of ten triangles (Discard two)
  • Three 2 3/4in squares of dark green cut into four quarter square triangles each, for a total of eleven triangles (Discard one)
  • Two 2 3/8in squares of cream cut into two half square triangles each, for a total of four triangles

Piece the eight outer quarter square triangle units following the fabric layout diagram.

Then piece the four center patches, using a pair of green quarter square triangles and a single cream half square triangle.

Piece a cream square, two outer quarter square triangle units and one half square triangle inner unit into a quarter block unit. Then make three more quarter block units. Join each quarter block unit as a four patch to complete the finished block.

This block would make a nice Christmas lap quilt in a repeat block layout. The design needs sashing to stop the wreaths merging into one.
