On December 1st to 6th 2011, Midsomer Quilting held an exhibition of 84 miniature quilts 12in x 12in. There was a secret auction to win the quilts in aid of CLIC Sargent the children's cancer charity.
Back in April Midsomer Quilting, of Chilcompton, staged Europe’s first exhibition of work by the international - largely American - ‘Twelve by 12’ group. Every couple of months these twelve quilters challenge one another to create twelve inch square mini-quilts, on themes such as Chocolate or Water. (The quilts then went on from Midsomer Quilting to be exhibited at the Festival of Quilts before they were exhibited at Houston, their first showing in the USA.)
The reaction to the Chilcompton exhibition was so great that Midsomer Quilting challenged visitors to the shop to create their own square foot quilts, this time with the theme ‘Fruit’. From Thursday, December 1st until Tuesday, December 6th 2011, well over 80 of the entries were shown at the shop between 10.30 and 4pm.
Customers from as far afield as New Zealand and California sent entries and there more from Europe, Italy and Germany in particular. A number of those who teach at the shop have also contributed, Alicia Merrett, Anja Townrow, Christine Porter, Dawn Cameron-Dick and Di Wells among them. The overall standard was remarkably high. Many of the quilts were offered for sale by secret auction with all monies donated to CLIC Sargent, the charity that supports children with cancer.
