The 18th edition of the European Patchwork Meeting ended on the 16th of September 2012. The number of visitors in 2012 was about the same as in 2011 with perhaps a slight increase; international attendance was up, with groups travelling from Japan, USA, Canada and Eastern European countries.
More than 1000 works have been exhibited from the 13th to the 16th of September including traditional, contemporary and artistic quilts shown to their best advantage in 23 sites around the 4 villages of the Val d'Argent.
The Carrefour, unsurprisingly, has gained a worldwide reputation for the very high quality of its exhibitions: there were American collectors such as Howard Marcus (USA) and his traditional quilts and Jack Walsh (USA) and his art quilts but also some superb works coming from Japan were exhibited, textile works from the French collector Monique Alphand and religious quilts from the Prague museum-some dating from the 16th and 17th century. The "Carrefour" gave also the opportunity to artists from Canada and the Czech Republic, both guests of honor this year, to exhibit their works. The many exhibitions also included works from European artists, regional French patchwork clubs, France Patchwork and South Africa.
But the Carrefour offers more than that: it also features over 150 shopping stands displaying their latest products and located in the commercial area; furthermore it proposed guided tours, fashion shows, beginners and advanced patchwork and quilting classes, lectures…
It is however the exhibitors' and visitors' comments which, as you can read here below, are the real proof of success:
"We were very fortunate to be there Thursday and Friday and we really enjoyed ourselves! A return journey of more than 1800km, but Ste-Marie deserves that. Thanks to all the artists and also to the ever present organization team, everything was perfect and we came back home with a lot of new ideas. See you soon!" Chistine Adam (16/09/2012)
"My 11th visit to Ste-Marie-aux-Mines and I am still full of enthusiasm…each time there are so many discoveries to be made, so many wonderful things to admire…and it is getting better each year…thank you for giving us the opportunity to dream and travel around the wonderful patchwork world…see you next year for sure!" Régine Imbert Coutret (17/09/2012)
"Thank you for organizing each year such a wonderful fair. I can’t wait until next year and in the mean time we will be admiring the photos of all the works coming from around the world." Dominique Delvaux (17/09/2012)
"And now my new horizon is the 2013 Carrefour! I really hope that nothing will prevent me from attending because it is my "desert island", far away from every day’s worries. Thank you for all this." Véronique Leau (17/09/2012)
The international competition element has also grown in success each year. The 2012 theme was "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow" and it did captivate quite a few with 130 entries. Congratulations to Linda Kemshall (GB), who won this year's "best of" prize, a 3 000€ cheque! The 6 other finalists shared a total amount of more than 6 000€! This exhibition will travel during a whole year through some European and non-European countries. You can view the competition quilts here, www.patchwork-europe, by clicking on the tab "contest". Next year's competition will be on the theme "Distortion", more details can be found at the website as above.
