I found this in an antique shop while in Canada....I know what it was used for, but not sure how it would have fit into the bigger picture. Any ideas??

Is it some sort of ancient knitting machine cos it looks like the handles move left to right.

Is it some kind of cord or braid weaving machine?
 
How old is it? It appears to have fairly modern screws, or have cross headed screws been about for a long time?

I also think it could be for wool. something to wind it into balls from the shanks we used to have to hold for Mum.
