|Thread: The Impatient Patchworker|
I am not sure that I am an impatient quilter or just an inexperienced quilter having only been quilting for less than 2 years. I enjoy making bags as well as quilts but I have not made a large quilt yet, most of my work is done on the sewing machine for quickness as I do not have a lot of spare time for quilting as my other hobby is breeding and showing guinea pigs. I do tend to hand sew my bindings down as I can do this in my lunch hour at work or in the car leaving me more time at home to use the sewing machine. The main problem I have is making up my mind what pattterns to use I like doing log cabin and have made quite a few things using log cabin.
I like to make bright coloured quilts I did enter the W.I challenge using Makowers Cascade and the judges comment was that the contrasting colours should have been more subtle but I had called it Geometric Jazz what else did they expect.
I like making bags as well this is the 3rd one I have made in this style but I updated this one so that I could make it in a weekend as it was a spur of the moment idea to make a bag for my son's girlfriend as she was starting a new job, instead of using freezer paper and turning under the edges before stitching the squares I used bond a web and then oversewed them with a verigated thread . I also used another method for inserting the handles that I learnt on a workshop locally which meant I did not have to hand sew the top of the lining in place
My first bag was made at the W.I's Denman College in January 07 which was the first time I had used a sewing machine for many years and my first attempt at patchwork for about 20 years and now I have the patchwork bug very badly
|Thread: Festival of Quilts|
This was my first visit to the quilt festival I was amazed at the all the different quilts on display and thought that Ferret's quilt of the herd of cows was really amazing I would not have a clue where to start on a quilt like that. I want to go back next year and do some of the workshops as well
on the shopping front I brought 8 different reels of Cotty Cottons from the Cotton Patch to add to my collection, the fabric to try and make my first foundation pieced quilt , and a set of circle templates these were on my shopping list plus the pattern for a stain glass effect frilled lizard would have loved to buy the kit but did not have enough cash with me by then and as the lady was over from Austrailia she could not take cards but I have quite a stash of batiks and will send off for the bias tape when I get that far if I do so before next year's festival
