Calculating Bias

Updated: Wednesday, February 24, 2010

1. Width of bias strips to be cut:
        a. Determine finished width of bias required.
        b. Add 3/8" for seam allowances.

2. What size square of fabric is required to produce known length of continuous bias?
        a. Multiply length of bias needed x width of bias to be cut (including seam allowance)
        b. Find square root.
        c. The answer is the size of square required. Add an extra inch or so to give enough for overlap.

e.g. For double binding a quilt 72" square, 288" of 2½ " width bias would be needed.
288 x 2.5 = 720
Square root = 26.8"
Therefore cut a 28" square to begin.

3. How much bias will a known square of fabric produce?
        a. Multiply measurement of 2 sides together.
        b. Divide answer by width of bias to be cut (including seam allowance)

e.g. An 18" square of fabric would produce the following length of 1 ¼" continuous bias for single binding:
            18 x 18 = 324
            Divided by 1.25 = 259" (6½m)
