Issue 149 – June 2006

1. Make a Cathedral Window unit as described previously. Bring 2 shorter sides of unit, marked A and B in dia. 7a, round to meet each other with right side facing outwards. If you try to do it with right side facing inward, it is very difficult to turn whole thing right side out again after stitching. Stitch 2 shorter sides A and B together, slip-stitching as when two folded squares were originally joined. This will make a tube rather like a napkin ring which is just about big enough for you to get your hand inside, dia. 7b.

2. Cut a second 23/8" square of window fabric to match one already stitched in place.

3. Turn fabric tube round to show seam just stitched. Place square of window fabric over this seam on point, positioning it as you did first window square, with 1/8" of background fabric showing on all sides, dia. 7c. Follow steps 1 – 9 in ‘Adding windows’ to stitch window into place.

4. Flatten ring as shown in dia. 7d, matching joining seams. Stitch together one side of pincushion, either with ladder stitch or by over-sewing as before. Stitch from centre outwards to one corner, then start again from centre and stitch to other corner.

5. Stuff pincushion very firmly, especially in corners, with scraps of wadding or chosen filling. Finally pin and stitch edges of open end together, again working from centre outwards. This allows extra stuffing to be added at sharp corners, at last minute, before stitching to keep them firm, photo 3.
