Cutting,.
Sails, dia. 1
1a. Cut 3 strips 6" x 20" from each bright fabric.
b. A total of 22 strips are needed, 2 or 3 of each fabric.
2. Cut 11 strips 6½" x 20" from background fabric.
3. Stitch 3 strips together – a bright strip either side of a background one.
4. Slice at a small angle, then cut a wedge 5½" wide lining up with the new angle just created.
5a. Continue cutting a small angle off fabric strip and cutting a 5½" wedge across the whole strip.
b. 3 wedges are needed from each strip.
VERY IMPORTANT! Be consistent and cut the angles and the wedges in the same direction on every strip. If you change the angle, the sails won’t all rotate in the same direction and the overall pattern will not work.
Blocks - Cut 2, 5½" squares from each wedge, dia. 2.
- Stitch 4 squares to make a block measuring 10½" square, dia. 3.
- 16 blocks are needed to make quilt centre measuring 40½" square.

two, 1¼" x 40½" strips
two, 1¼" x 52½" strips
four, 1¼" x 5 ½" strips.
2. Cut from background fabric:
four, 5½" x 40½" strips
four, 5½" squares
