Pressing

Updated: Wednesday, November 11, 2009

Pressing in brief.

When piecing fabrics it is essential to press each seam as it is stitched. Firstly, before opening the pieces and therefore on the wrong side, press the seam flat, to set the stitches. Then, on the right side of the fabric, press both seams towards the darker fabric, using the toe of the iron and finally on the wrong side. It is also acceptable to press seams open as this helps to distribute the bulk of fabric created when lots of seams meet for example in the centre of a star block. Press rather than iron preferably without steam. Spray starch can be used to help return a washed fabric to its original condition.
